Food plays an important role in Italian families. Once at the table, the stories are released and joys and sorrows are shared; it is the nicest way of being together with your family. The Dutch Saskia Schmitz also experienced this when she lived in the 1980s with the Esposito family of ristorante Da Gigino in Sorrento, located on the Gulf of Naples. In this colourful, narrative cookbook, Schmitz shares with us what she has learned, seen and tasted in Italy, not only in the culinary field but also in the many family traditions. Accompanied by photographer Hans de Kort, she gives us a unique glimpse into the kitchen of ristorante Da Gigino. She also takes us through Sorrento and the surrounding area, and we are allowed to sit at the family table at home. 'Ristorante Da Gigino' is therefore much more than just a cookbook with dishes from a typical family restaurant: it gives us a beautiful and intimate picture of Italian family life, the nostalgia for bygone times and the rich culture of the region. Saskia Schmitz (1960) worked as a fashion/beauty editor for many magazines, including Viva, Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, Margriet, Top Santé and Yes. She is currently a teaching assistant at Visio, a school for blind and partially sighted children. Hans de Kort (1963) is an independent photographer for fashion, travel and portraiture magazines and advertising agencies.
